Condensation!

Every morning now I have to mop up puddles of condensation from my windowsills, my curtains are going mildewed from it - any ideas how to combat it? Of course when I was a girl (quavering old lady voice again) we didn't have that problem as the ice on the windows didn't melt because the house never got warm enough. I kind of miss those pretty patterns on the windows though. When I was at boarding school, the glass of water by your bed would freeze in the winter, that's cold! It's not as if I have the heating on that high - usually 16 degrees (don't know how to put a symbol in here!) , I'm one of those people who layers on extra clothing first. Does anyone know whether I am saving the planet (!) more by having the curtains open and using natural light or keeping them closed to conserve some heat? I always struggle with this one.

This is really badly put together, isn't it?!

  1. I used to live in a draughty Victorian pile and in winter we routinely had ice forming inside the windows. The upside of this was that the ice made a very efficient draught excluder.

Now I live in quite a new house and we still get condensation on the double glazed windows no matter what we do. We've tried every combination of windows/doors open/closed but come October the condensation starts and lasts till late Spring.

One tip is to line curtains with thermal linings which can help make a difference. They help keep rooms cool in summer too.

So long as you keep them closed.

  2. when I was a nipper, we lived in a draughty old Victorian pile and me and my brother ( or 'my brother and I' - if you prefer ) would fight to be first up in the morning so that we could 'crack the ice' in the loo.... if you know what I mean....
